The American Dream Is Killing Me
Hey everyone!
Green Day released a new single a couple weeks ago titled “The American Dream Is Killing Me”. It is the lead single from their upcoming fourteenth album, Saviors, which is due out on January 19, 2024.
The song struck a chord with me for a lot of reasons. Green Day definitely hasn’t held back on their social and political protests throughout their career. I listened to American Idiot (2004) a lot growing up, which was inspired by events like the Iraq War and George W. Bush presidency. The band was very open on that album about their disillusionment with the media, politicians, and large corporations. Fast forward two decades and many of the same issues remain as the world has grown more complex due to social media, COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, etc.
In their new song, Green Day reflects on the so-called “American Dream.” The term was popularized in the 1930s as a set of ideals including liberty, equality, and opportunity regardless of social class, race, and ethnicity. Throughout American history, however, there have been many critics of this ethos with some contending that it has resulted in materialism, consumerism, and exploitation.
Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong commented that the song is “a look at the way the traditional American Dream doesn’t work for a lot of people—in fact, it's hurting a lot of people.” The band showcases their disapproval with commentary on current events like the homelessness crisis, gentrification, and social media. Below are few excerpts:
Send out an SOS
It’s getting serious
Bulldoze your family home
Now it’s a condo
Don’t want no huddled masses
TikTok and taxes
Under the overpass
Sleeping in broken glass
I admire the band’s boldness throughout the track as they express dissatisfaction with the status quo. The song appears to be resonating with listeners who are also fed up with things like the news cycle, corporate greed, inequality, and the political environment.
Personally, the song hits home for me as someone currently in the American workforce. I recently read something hilarious but deeply saddening at the same time, which is that a study showed that American workers hate their jobs so much that nearly half wouldn’t wish it on their worst enemy. It’s hard to comprehend that so many people spend most of their lives doing a job they hate because of money and status.
Of course, not everyone will 100% agree with the song’s message and that is okay in my opinion. Music is a healthy way to explore different perspectives and emotions. As artists, Green Day have keenly channeled their standpoint into 3 minutes of sound.
Musically, “The American Dream Is Killing Me” is a dynamic track featuring the punk rock guitar riffs that helped make Green Day famous. It is one of my favorites of theirs in a long time. The single comes with a music video of the band performing the song during a zombie apocalypse. Check it out below!
